Comprehensive breakdown of each Kilimanjaro route
The "Coca-Cola" Route
Easiest trail technically, uses huts (not tents), shortest itinerary available so less ideal for acclimatisation. Best for hikers who prefer hut accommodation and a more direct climb.
Moderate to Hard
5-6 days
60-70 km
Huts
Hikers preferring hut accommodation and a straightforward climb
June-October, Late December-February
Bring warm sleeping layers. Shorter route tends to have lower summit rates without acclimatisation day.
The "Whiskey" Route
Popular, scenic western approach with varied scenery and good acclimatisation profile (especially on 7-8 day options). Camping route.
Moderate to Hard
6-8 days
60-70 km
Camping
Trekkers seeking scenic variety and good acclimatisation
June-October, December-February
More varied terrain than Marangu. Better acclimatisation profile improves summit chances significantly.
The Northern Approach
Northern approach, generally quieter and less crowded, gentler gradients on lower slopes, can be slightly easier for summit day. Approaches from the north, starting near Kenyan border.
Moderate
6-7 days
65-75 km
Camping
Hikers seeking a quieter experience with gradual ascent
Year-round (drier on northern side)
Routes merge with Marangu for descent. Less varied scenery than western routes but compensated by solitude.
The Scenic Route
Very scenic, approaches from west, excellent acclimatisation profile, popular for longer itineraries (8-10 days). Begins in pristine forest and joins Machame or Shira before the summit circuit.
Moderate
7-10 days
70-85 km
Camping
Trekkers prioritizing success rates and scenic beauty
June-October, December-February
Longer route provides excellent acclimatisation. Considered the most beautiful route with highest success rates.
The Challenge Route
Short, steep, very direct southern approach; considered the toughest route on Kilimanjaro because it gains altitude quickly. Best for experienced, fit hikers or those seeking a challenge.
Very Hard
6-7 days
55-65 km
Camping
Experienced hikers with prior high-altitude experience seeking a challenge
June-October, December-February
Not recommended for novice climbers. Requires excellent fitness and prior altitude experience. Use 7-day itinerary for better acclimatisation.
